What numbers does a check consist of?

A check typically consists of the following numbers:

  • The check number, which is unique to the check and is typically found in the top right or bottom right corner of the check.
  • The routing number, which identifies the bank or financial institution that issued the check and is typically found at the bottom of the check on the left-hand side.
  • The account number, which identifies the specific account the check is drawn on and is typically found on the bottom of the check on the right-hand side after the routing number.

What is the routing on a check?

A routing number, also known as an ABA routing number or routing transit number (RTN), is a nine-digit code that is used to identify a financial institution in the United States. This code is typically used to facilitate the transfer of money between banks, and it is used in various transactions, such as setting up direct deposit or making electronic payments.

The routing number appears at the bottom of a check, along with the account number. It is usually the first set of numbers that appears on the check, followed by the account number and a check number. The routing number is used to identify the financial institution that issued the check and the specific branch of that institution where the account is held.

A routing number is also used to electronically transfer money between financial institutions and facilitates the completion of transactions between them, such as wire transfers and Direct Deposit. The routing number is unique to a financial institution and is the same for all its branches.
